Towards a reasoned integration of generative AI in higher education: empowering teachers for adaptive teaching and learning

Résumé

Purpose: This research paper proposes a theoretically grounded framework for the responsible integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education, addressing the polarization between uncritical adoption and outright resistance.

Design/methodology: Drawing on socio-technical systems theory, responsible innovation frameworks, and dynamic capabilities theory, we develop a teacher-centered professional development program that will be implemented at ESPRIT School of Engineering. The framework integrates pedagogical, ethical, and critical competencies necessary for AI integrity in educational practice.

Findings: We introduce the concept of “AI integrity” as a balanced approach that emphasizes pedagogical intentionality, ethical awareness, and human agency. The multi-level governance framework clarifies roles and responsibilities across institutions, faculty, students, and AI systems, providing actionable guidance for policy development and implementation.

Practical implications: The framework offers concrete strategies for universities to develop institutional AI governance, faculty competencies, and student AI literacy while navigating tensions between efficiency, personalization, academic integrity, and human-centered education.

Originality/value: This paper advances beyond tool-centered training approaches by positioning AI integration as a socio-technical transformation requiring coordinated action across organizational levels, theoretically anchored in established frameworks and empirically grounded in educational practice.
